Fårö - Gotland’s wild and windswept gem

This is a free sample of a VIP road trip.

A road trip on Fårö offers dramatic coastal landscapes, mighty rauk fields and beautiful sandy beaches. The tour begins in Fårösund where the free ferry takes you across to Fårö. The first stop is Sudersand, one of Gotland’s finest sandy beaches. Then, Fårö lighthouse and the quiet beach at Ekeviken await.

Along the way there are several iconic places such as the rauk areas at Langhammars and Digerhuvud where the sea has shaped impressive rock formations. Here you will also find Langhammars windmill and the historic fishing village of Helgumannen.

At Lauterhorn you can enjoy the view over the bay before the trip ends at Gamla Hamn where the rauk “The Dog” stands as a sentinel by the sea. Then the journey returns to Fårösund, with memories of a trip filled with Fårö’s unique nature and atmosphere.

This road trip is a great way to experience Fårö’s rugged beauty and timeless landscape.

NOTE! Remember to only park in clearly marked parking spaces. It is not permitted to drive or park on the side of the road even if it is only sand, gravel and stones. Take care of the unique nature!

1, Fårösund – The starting point for the journey where the free ferry takes you across to Fårö. A lively place with restaurants, shops and a harbour overlooking the strait. During high season, be prepared for long queues to the ferry in both directions.

2, Sudersand – Sudersand is one of Gotland’s most beautiful and popular beaches with soft white sand and shallow, clear water. There is plenty of space for both sunbathing and swimming and there are several cafés and restaurants along the beach.

For those who want to stay longer there are several accommodation options, from cottages and hotels to camping and glamping. Sudersand Resort offers everything from modern cottages and apartments to campsites for motorhomes, tents and caravans. There are also simpler guesthouses and private cottages to rent nearby.

Sudersand is a perfect starting point for exploring Fårö or just enjoying the sea and the relaxed atmosphere.

3, Fårö lighthouse – At the northernmost tip of Fårö stands the imposing lighthouse, looking out over the sea. The area is barren and wild with pebbles and a feeling of being at the end of the world.

4, Ekeviken – A quiet and shallow sandy beach protected by dunes and pine trees. A more secluded and peaceful place than Sudersand, perfect for a moment of peace.

5, Langhammars – One of Fårö’s most impressive rauk areas where tall and powerful rock formations created by nature rise along the coast. One of the island’s most iconic places.

Langhammars windmill – One of Fårö’s few preserved windmills, beautifully situated in the open landscape near the rauks. A nice place for a stop.

6, Helgumannen – A historic fishing village with small weathered wooden huts close to the sea. A place where you can feel the wings of history and imagine life as a fisherman in the past.

7, Digerhuvud – Sweden’s largest rauk area where the rock formations stretch for several kilometers along the dramatic coastline. A powerful place where the forces of nature are truly visible.

8, Lauterhorn – A beautiful bay with a small harbor and a peaceful atmosphere. Here you can enjoy the view and also spend the night in your motorhome right on the water.

9, Gamla Hamn & Rauken Hunden – A historic harbor where the peculiar Rauk “The Dog” stands as a sentinel by the water. An atmospheric place, especially at sunset.

Please note that the last part of the road is quite narrow and ends at a small parking lot so may not be suitable for a larger vehicle.
